Misuro il tempo (I Measure Time) is a site-specific installation conceived by Bianco-Valente for the Terme di Casamicciola building, on the island of Ischia, owned by the charitable institution Pio Monte della Misericordia, founded in Naples in 1602. The thermal complex is an architecture carrying important historical and cultural memory, but has been in a state of abandonment since 1973.
In conceiving the intervention, Bianco-Valente addressed, on a philosophical level, the sense of the passing of time and the way in which human beings, through their own actions and everyday experiences, give substance to this dimension that accompanies them throughout the course of their existence.
We are taught to think that time is measured with clocks and calendars, but in reality we measure it with our thoughts, our actions, and with the body that keeps changing at every moment.
Starting from these reflections, the artists decided to cover the entire facade of the building with irregular sheets of black tissue paper that, thanks to their thinness, were able to slip into every irregularity that had emerged over time on the plaster and exposed stone of the building, creating a second skin that brings out its effects.
On this new facade the phrase Misuro il tempo (I measure time) was installed, which in its emblematic nature raises a question about who is really measuring time: the building, left in a state of abandonment for over fifty years, or the people who measure time through their own existence.
The exhibition, curated by Maria Savarese, was promoted and funded by the Pio Monte della Misericordia, with the moral patronage of the Municipality of Casamicciola Terme and the patronage — called "Matronato" by the museum itself, from "Madre" — of the Fondazione Donnaregina for contemporary arts.
