Human beings are the only known form of life to have developed, over the course of biological evolution, full self-awareness. This happened as language skills were refined, allowing our ancestors to express, in ever greater detail, the smallest nuances of their feelings.
Becoming aware of oneself and perceiving one’s own presence in the external reality spontaneously gave rise, since time immemorial, to certain questions to which no definitive answer can be given, in particular about the true meaning of one’s own existence, of one’s passage on earth.
To answer these and other existential questions, religions were born, philosophy developed, and some individuals have felt, and still feel, the need to withdraw from worldliness and everyday life in order to give themselves and humanity time, meditation and prayer.
There will always be a light on as long as human beings keep asking themselves questions about the meaning of life.
These are the considerations that emerged during Bianco-Valente’s first site visit to the Sant’Angelo Grotto in Palombaro (Abruzzo), characterized by an almost white, smooth natural vault, a place that struck them with the great energy that can be felt there. To establish a relationship with the hermitage, the artists chose the grey stone of Latronico, a town in Basilicata to which they are deeply attached, and with it made an oil lamp, which they then carried from Basilicata to the grotto, where it was lit during the opening of Eremi Arte 2017.
Anyone can add the oil needed to keep this small light alive.
