With Breathless, Bianco-Valente investigate the cortical dynamics governing the organization of human thought and its verbalization according to grammatical rules. At the heart of the work lies an analogy, a bridge between what occurs in our brain and what a microprocessor might accomplish in pursuit of the same goal.
The artwork is a computer assembled on the floor in spare and essential form, reading from its own memory several poems written by the artists.
This is not the reproduction of a recorded sound; it is the "own voice" of the microprocessor, which synthesizes the words in real time.
The paradox is that these poems, imbued with strong human emotion, are read by a machine with a poorly modulated voice, at times uncertain, yet warm and profound. What strikes and disturbs is the sensation of primordial depth evoked by this "soft mechanical voice."
Listen to the recording of poems read by the computer
I should learn from you
what I really am
in this world.
Absence
abandon
light mute evaporation. _ listen
Caress me mother
Hold me.
Don't leave
your smell and your skin
suspended in the air.
I could not define you. _ listen
There is no light, mother
In the future
and in the silence.
Let me hug you
let me feel you near. _ listen
Welcome X
Welcome
my soft crawling subidentity.
Take care
of the mute fading traces
I'm leaving on your skin. _ listen
It's your voice
that I want to feel
filling up my mind.
Fading stream
void field
It's your voice that I want. _ listen
Down, down
I'm falling down
Squeeze me out
from the folds of your skin
Gently, wash me away
from the silent pause
of your mind
I'm there, it's me
the blue beam
at your feet. listen
